# Glossary

### Collection

A set of pages of one kind, defined in `src/content.config.ts`: the docs, a changelog, an older version, or an API reference. Each has its own folder, schema and route.

### Component

A piece of the page's interface, such as tabs or a card. Starter components ship with your site; others install from the [registry](#registry). See the [component catalog](/components).

### Content source

Somewhere outside `src/content` that a collection reads its pages from, such as another git repository or a Notion database. See [Content from other sources](/content-sources/git).

### Coordinate

The stable name of an API page, such as an operation's `operationId`. Links to API pages use coordinates, so they survive URL changes. See [Cite API pages](/api-reference/citations).

### Feature

A registry item that changes your site in several places, such as adding a changelog. `nimbus-docs add` hands it to your coding agent as a [recipe](#recipe) instead of copying files.

### llms.txt

A plain-text index of a site's pages at `/llms.txt`, for AI tools. See [Markdown and llms.txt](/ai/publish-markdown).

### Markdown version

The Markdown copy of a page that Nimbus publishes beside its HTML, at `<page>/index.md`.

### nimbus.json

The committed record of where your site's files came from and what you've installed. See [`nimbus.json`](/project-structure#nimbusjson--the-provenance-record).

### Partial

A passage written once in `src/content/partials/` and included on several pages with `<Render>`. See [Reusable snippets](/writing/reusable-snippets).

### Prepared page

An API page's data, worked out from the spec at build time, so serving it on request doesn't parse the spec again.

### Recipe

Markdown instructions a coding agent follows to add a [feature](#feature) to your site, in your site's own style. Also the content-type guides in the [Content style guide](/style-guide).

### Registry

The catalog that `nimbus-docs add` installs from. Its items are components, libraries, features and content sources. See [Registry](/registry).

### Rendering on request

Building a page when a reader asks for it, on a server, instead of once at build time. See [Choose build or request rendering](/reference/rendering).

### Sätteri

The Markdown parser Nimbus uses. It's fast, and it means remark plugins passed to `mdx()` have no effect; see [Markdown and MDX](/writing/markdown-and-mdx).

### Slice

Part of a site built and deployed on its own, such as one product's guides. See [Partial builds](/publish/partial-builds).

### Starter

The files the scaffolder writes into a new site: layouts, components, styles, routes and example content. They're yours from then on. See [Ownership](/styling/how-customization-works).

### Templates tag

A tag such as `templates-v0.7.0` in the Nimbus repository, marking the starter files of one scaffolder release. `outdated --to <tag>` compares your files with a given release.

### Upgrade entry

A step `nimbus-docs migrate` lists when you move to a newer release: required, or optional for improvements you can adopt later. See [Upgrading](/publish/upgrading).
